- The trouble
with old people like myself is that they die out pretty fast when
the old dame or gentleman gives up the ghost - and there goes the
advocacy and activism, right? We have got to learn to pass on the
torch.
.Too
many good beginnings have rested on the shoulders of some one old
lady, and have died when she did - like the absolutely splendid
site of the Amherst Gray Panthers, which died when its leader got
sick. and has left only its ghost behind on the web.
Take a
look!
It's become part of the non-violence network at
http://www.nonviolence.org/amhvigil/graypant.html
- which is fine
- but the Panthers part of it died when Dixie could no longer keep it
up.
.I
put a bio for Maggie as one of the links on this site, since I am
lucky enough to have met a guy who knew her and liked her a
lot!
But,
hey, we have take up where she left off, not just celebrate
her work and her
spirit!
She would
have hated that! Gray
Panthers' national group lasted quite a while after Maggie konked
out, but it's been pretty tame for some time - Google lists the
national site listing as "Gray Panthers. Description. Founded in
1970, the Gray Panthers is a senior citizen's advocacy group
(The
Hill, February 21, 2001)."
And on the
Resource Directory for Older People - A Cooperative
Effort
of the National Institute on Aging and the Administration on Aging -
Gray Panthers is listed as a governmental rsource at 733 15th Street,
NW, Suite 437 Washington, DC 20005. Sounds like AARP to
me!
Although
there are signs it may be coming back to
life.
becoming newly active now - mostly against corporate greed, I think.
You can see it for yourself at
http://www.graypanthers.org/
DC
But
we are beginning to learn - as you can see by clicking on some of the
listings below. A
more promising site in DC may be one which Google lists as "Gray
Panthers. of Metropolitan Washington, DC 20001. ... In 1973 Janet N.
Newman, with the aid of a few of her friends, organized Gray Panthers
in this area." It's at
http://www.angelfire.com/pe/DCGrayPanthers
Here are some
other sites, each of which will have its own character. You'll have
to judge for yourself how activist-minded they are, and how they are
run - whether thy operate mainly as pressure groups, and how much
their members also work to make changes in their own
communities.
